Mayo County Council this week introduced new bye-laws to reduce the speed limit in 114 estates throughout the county to 30km per hour, this new slew of estates follows a reduction in the speed limit in 99 estates in 2015, and the council will be considering a further list of estates for implementation of a similar speed limit later this year.

McDonnell becomes county's first citizen

Fianna Fáil councillor Al McDonnell was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the next 12 months on Monday morning this week at the council's annual general meeting. This is the second time that Cllr McDonnell has been elected as Cathoirleach, having previously worn the chain of office in 1998. The Ballyglass based councillor first became a councillor in 1987 when he replaced former minister and European commissioner Padráig Flynn on the council, and he has been elected to the council in each of the subsequent local elections since.

Pádraig Pearse Award nomination divides the chamber

The seemingly innocuous matter of Mayo County Council nominating someone for the Pádraig Pearse Award took a long time to get sorted out over the course of two meetings of the local authority this month. The item initially came up for decision at the March meeting of the council which was held last Monday week, March 7 but was adjourned after both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had nominated An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Dep Éamon Ó Cuív  respectively.

Ó'Cuív to open Ballinrobe office next week

With the general election on the horizon, Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó'Cuív will open a new constituency office in Ballinrobe next week. The newly expanded Galway West constituency will take in a large chunk of south Mayo after the changes to constituency boundaries since the last general election in 2011.
